Racial disparities and trends in radiation therapy after breast-conserving surgery for early-stage breast cancer in women, 1992 to 2002.
OBJECTIVES Clinical guidelines recommend that when breast-conserving surgery is provided as primary therapy for early-stage breast cancer, radiation therapy should follow. We do not know whether racial/ethnic disparities in this therapy exist and how disparities may have changed over time. DESIGN AND PATIENTS We studied 89,110 women who were diagnosed with incident early-stage (American Joint...

Conservative Breast Surgery Stage I and Stage II breast cancers are early cancers that are not fixed to the skin or muscle. If lymph nodes are involved, they are not fixed to each other or to underlying structures. Modified radical mastectomy continues to be appropriate for some patients, but breast conservation therapy is now regarded as the optimal treatment for most. Six prospective randomiz...

Breast-conserving therapy (BCT), or breast-conserving surgery with adjuvant radiation therapy, has become a standard treatment alternative to mastectomy for women with early-stage breast cancer after many long-term studies have reported comparable rates of overall survival and local control. Oncoplastic breast surgery in the setting of BCT consists of various techniques that allow for an excisi...

Introduction The first medical intervention for many breast cancer patients is breast conserving surgery (BCS) and/or modified radical mastectomy (MRM). Most of these patients undergo radiation therapy, following surgery. The most common side-effect of breast radiotherapy is skin damage. In the present study, the severity of acute skin changes and the underlying causes were investigated in pati...
